It looks like your average alien slavegirl latches onto reclusive high school boy manga. It has a wikipedia article if you want the story in more detail (I've not read more than the blurb on the back of each book, and that was while ago.)

I actually luved Chobits, although the fanservice went over my head. But for some reason, I was put off by the whole RobotxHuman thing. Even though when I read (and watched) Big O, I was rooting for another RobotxHuman couple. >_< I don't know why. But yeah, I adored Plum and the other Persocoms. The first books are very good, much more humourous than later. Later in the series starts to get a little odd. And a bit confusing, depending on the translation.
But, it's very short, so it won't cost you much to read it. Well, maybe not "very" short. Extremely short compared to Rumiko Takahashi works. Short compared to most shojo manga series. Shorter than a few other Clamp works (Holic, Tsubasa, Cardcaptor Sakura ((both series)), Legal Drug, etc). Ok yeah, I'll shut up now. ^_^

And shorter than X I suspect. On a similar note, for some reason, about five years ago, you could find the X manga over here, now it's difficult to find hide or hair of it. (I like X, a lot)
Also, what kind of odd? Lain was odd, and win, Excel Saga was a different kind of odd, but still win, and so on.
In other news, I actually have three more DVDs than I said I had, I'd forgotten I'd lent someone stuff.

Odd as in...."Where the **** did that idea come from!?!?!" I've reread the series several times and I still don't understand everything. If you've read "Miyuki-chan In Wonderland", the oddness factor is similar. Also, this is Clamp and before X became such a big thing, so it was odd to see some of the character types as they hadn't really appeared in other Clamp works.
Small Chobits Spoiler:
It changes from the usual Shojo-type story where it's "Oh, is it wrong that I love a computer?" more to "I must suddenly protect my computer before she or someone else dies!"
But I still luve the comedy, and the pretty people at the end, lol. The story can get exciting, although the excitement is a little marred by the confusion.

You can still get X over here, mainly from a speciality anime/sci-fi/fantasy store called Minotaur over here that probably has every imaginable manga title, and probably from Borders here.
I keep checking Minotaur for Broken Sky, because according to Australian bookshop sites, we do have it... I can't find it anywhere though. I did get volumes 14, 15 and the special edition of Mars though, so now I have the entire series.

For the record, X is what you show to people who claim that all of Clamp's work is magical girl fluff, or indeed, just fluff. For those of you who don't know, it's Clamp's version of the apocalypse, which is basically an excuse for a fight between two groups of seven super powered people. The series doesn't pull any punches with plenty of blood and guts.
In other words, not your average magical girl fluff.
