Despite the fact I'm only in the first book of Braided Path, Lucia wins over Lyra. I've never read His Dark Materials, but I saw the movie and couldn't stand Lyra. So Lucia wins by default. Ahh, but that could have been the film's fault. For example, I utterly despise Harry and Hermione in the Harry Potter films, but they're fine in the books. Awful, awful acting. I've still yet to see "The Golden Compass" (seriously, why change the name?!) because I'm scared that it might ruin my vision of the book.

They probably changed the name because it's called 'The Golden Compass' in America. It was supposed to be called that over here too, but for some reason they had to change it. That's why the trilogy is called 'His Dark Materials', it was supposed to be a set of three objects.

Ahh, I see.
It makes more sense for the first book to be called "The Golden Compass", I suppose, because then it fits in with the titles of the other two, but "The Northern Lights" sounds prettier.

Wow, I'm so observant. Didn't even realize that "The Golden Compass" was from that series. Of course, I've never read either. I had a small desire to see the movie, but that's only because Nicole Kidman was in it, and I enjoy seeing her on the big screen (cuz I think she's purty, lol)

Ahh, but that could have been the film's fault. Quite true. It still doesn't encourage me to read the books though. Besides, I've just brought enough books to last me through to the end of the year. The only reason I saw the movie in the first place was because of Eva Green, though, and she wasn't in it for long

I rather like both characters. Lyra is more willful and prone to being childish, with very few responsibilities actually set on her by other people. She acts how she wants and not how other people want her to. Lucia on the other hand is forced to be mature, and practically everything she does is what she is told or feels she has to do. She's quiet and sensitive yet she never really gets to express it. Lucia is the tragic one that ends up sacrificing everything for everyone but herself, and Lyra is the romantic one that manages to save the world, with help from everyone else.
I think they're quite different, but if I had to chose it would be Lucia: partly because I preferred the Braided path trilogy to His Dark Materials, partly because she's far deeper in character.

Well this is a toughy, I've read both series multiple times and both are wholy orignal and delightful to me. Lyra is deffinatly the stronger character, but Lucia has a distinct human quality that comes through the pages. OMG its a tie for me
