ditto. Came out of nowhere.
After that no-one's did, 'cause I was expecting more to come out of nowhere.

Exactly. After Tane's, I was expecting everyone to die. ^_^

I guess this belongs to General Braided Path Discussions, since Tane bit the dust in the first book, and this subforum is about the second one, and it's a "general" type of question anyway... after all... thanks.

Yeah, Tane's death was a surprise, especially after Cailin said that Kaiku, Asara, Mishani and Tane walked a braided path. I was like "yeah, they're totally all gonna come out alive" whenever anyone of the four were in mortal peril...which they all were, at some point. I suppose that's just what you'd call misdirection I remember Lucia's death being a shock at the time, but in retrospect it was probably inevitable

I unfortunately learned about Tane's death in one of the topics here and spent all of Weavers dreading it.
Lucia's death took me by surprise. So did Reki's. I guess I should've seen both of them coming. *sobs*

I unfortunately learned about Tane's death in one of the topics here and spent all of Weavers dreading it. Yeah, but I bet it was a shock when you read on the boards I have a fear of that sort of thing, hence my avoidance of the board for months after The Fade came out. But that's a story for another topic...

I was a bit surprised by Reki's, too. I had thought maybe Asara had grown a heart, lol. Nah. I was more sad than surprised though. I was hoping he would live.

All the bad stuff Asara did will one day bite her in the ass. What goes around comes around. One of her kids will probably hate her or something like that.

Eh, Asara's kids will probably hate her either way, lol, for making them live that kind of life. I mean, Asara herself hated it. Her kids probably will too.
And beyond that, I can't really see Asara being that great of a mother. I can't see her hovering over her sick child with a washcloth waiting to wipe the sweat off the brow. Not unless her furthered her agenda. Which, I mean, I guess it would, because she wants a race of Asaras, more or less, so I guess she wants her kids to live. But didn't Asara say she never got sick? I can't remember. >_< *has a horrible memory*

Asara has something of a perfect metabolism and (I presume) immune system. So even if her kids are only half her (is aberrancy hereditary?) they probably won't get sick. But then, since Asara is only perfect because she can change, her kids wouldn't be until they change, if they can.
But anyway.
I can actually imagine Asara loving her children very much. Maybe not being the best of parents, but I believe she would care for them to the best of her abilities. Especially for all the effort she put into getting 'em.
Pretty much everyone's death came as a surprise to me: Tane's, Yugi's and Lucia's especially. Perhaps not the many Barak's, though, or the random characters that are brought in in a new chapter (that kid on the barge and Ruki's assassin) (since I've read enough of Chris' books to know they're only there to die and be an example).

I dunno, they're usually some kind of example, but on average more of them survive than are killed. The ones that die just stand out more.
I can imagine Asara being a really good mother, since the children were the thing she wanted most in the world. I imagine she'd be more likely to be annoyingly over-protective than dangerously negligent.

Well, I can imagine Asara being a really good mother regarding the technical aspects of parenthood.
But can she love her children?
I think they'll turn out just as ego-psycho as her, or worse.

I think she's capable of loving her children, again mostly because they're the thing she wanted most in the world. Whether they'd turn out as psycho as her is another matter, I reckon they'd be just as likely to if she was a good mother because that's probably how she'd teach them to behave. Possibly unwittingly.
