German media report that Sarkozy misspelled Obama's name in his congratulatory note "Barak".

Very happy Obama is president, because the idea of Sarah Palin being able to be president was a horrific idea.
Though my Mum thinks Obama will be assassinated in a couple of years by some extreme person from the bible belt.

Why do you think it would've been horrific?

Because she's moronic, she's far too right-winged for my tastes and as a possible first female president, she's a rather poor example for women, at least over here.
What did really annoy me about her is her anti-abortion rubbish... I don't know about over in America, but people over here that I know don't believe her 'my daughter had a choice to keep the baby' for a second.

I don't believe that either, lisa. She's almost said right out that her daughter wanted to get rid of it.
Palin would do everything I would hate. Abolish abortion (honestly, I'm not totally against or for abortion. I think people should have the choice, especially rape victims, but I myself would not have an abortion), make it so gay marriage can never be legalized, stay in the war, etc.
Of course, Obama is going to be the same way on a lot of those issues. So I'm screwed, lol.

I'm of the opinion that up to 12 weeks is fine, but after that it shouldn't happen unless it was rape/incest/medical problems for mother and baby, because I've known babies born at 22-23 weeks and they've turned out fine. I think it's just wrong that Palin says there should be no abortions for babies from rape or incest, that isn't fair to anyone. Yet gay marriage won't be legalised.

Eh, politics are corrupt and I don't think America will ever get itself out of the hole it's digging. And I'm American, candlelighted, though I take it as a compliment that you thought I was British. Really? Oh shoot. It's just so hard to tell on here.

Though my Mum thinks Obama will be assassinated in a couple of years by some extreme person from the bible belt. Harsh much? I really think people saying that is really obnoxious. I'm a huge Obama supporter, so I'm ecstatic about the election. I really think Obama is going to make our country a better place and, though McCain wouldn't have been a bad president, Obama is a much better choice.

Harsh much? I really think people saying that is really obnoxious. I don't think so, there's been enough assassination attempts and successes from people who are more than a little angry... there's probably a few of them in the bible belt. She also wanted Obama to win, but thinks he'll be killed.

I kind of live in the bible belt and most the people I've heard say that have been saying that they wish he would or sound really smug when they say it. I guess I read the words wrong and got defensive. I really am sorry I kind of snapped.

No problem, I don't think you snapped. I hope he's fine, cause I think he was the right choice, just an observation about how some other people might be thinking about him (which unfortunately seems to be true).

Okay. First things are first. I have to confess. I actually haven’t read this series (wait, please put the pitchforks and touches away). The reason I haven’t read it is because my country has this hilarious habit of having an amazing home grown author and completely ignoring him… I’m not joking. Walk into a Waterstones or a Whsmiths and if you’re lucky (and you're in one of the really big stores) you might find storm thief or (if you’re really lucky) you might see the Haunting of Alaizabel Cray. Oh and Malice, because it’s just been released.
Anyway, back on topic. I’ve got to confess. I don’t care for Obama... something about him makes me uneasy. It’s could be because I’m a cynic (romantic, but cynical), but I do hate the way people are throwing themselves at his feet and setting him a pedestal.
Now this is partly to do with media, who have been painting him as the second coming or something and have been giving him some amazing PR. But, the other problem comes from his supporters. They all blindly follow him. Never questioning what he’s saying. And that, to be honest, really unsettles me.
And really, it all boils down to this. It’s a black guy… in a country with quite a negative history regarding race and colour. Now, I know for a lot of people that is a big considering the past and everything, the lynch mob, the ku klux klan and various other things…
But naïve as this may sound; there is a part of me that asks.
“Why should that matter… why does it still matter? Haven’t we learnt anything? Why is skin still an issue?”
I mean don’t get me wrong. If the guy can deliver the goods (or the parts you could decipher from the inflated rhetoric) then more power to him. But this is danger, he’s been built up to dizzying heights… and to be honest it’s going to be one hell of fall when he makes a mistake.
