Ramblings under the cut. MAJOR spoilers for The Ace of Skulls, obviously! I am very, VERY sad about the state Jez is in right now. I'm at chapter 19 now and I really hate seeing her like this. The fact that the others are repelled by her advanced daemon-state doesn't really help, either. Since I'm only at the first third of the novel I cannot say yet whether there is or isn't hope for her but... I just wanted to say that I am not happy. ._.
She seemed fine at the end of book 3. Maybe a bit more daemon-like but still herself. Her human side is eroding fast. That's kind of hard to watch. Sigh.

I just finished the Ace of Skulls, and yes, Jez was one of my favourite characters. But then, it was a kind of given that it would go that way. It was hinted at since book 1 that it would be a one way slide. I toyed a bit with the idea that Crake might get her back to life - would the demon animating her make her count as 'recently dead or dying' so that could work? - and then drive out the mane.
However, that didn't happen. With that said, I kind of guessed what the artifact was, that Jez wasn't really killed, and that she'd summon the manes for the final battle.
Oh, and chapter 46 proves beyond a doubt that Chris is a bastard. Really liked these books though.

I thought the ending was perfect. Chris Wooding shows his innate understanding of human nature in how each and every character was farewelled: he stayed true to their characters, and in my opinion, the storyline was all the richer for it.
