So, what did everyone think? It kept me on the edge of my seat once I opened the book. I'm not sure how similar it is to Broken Sky, but it seems like a completely different beast when compared to Storm Thief, Poison, TBP, etc. The parts I disliked were mostly the comic bits. No offence to the artist, but that type of stylized art just doesn't appeal to me. Although it did work for Tall Jake. I almost instantly disliked Seth because of his first appearance. Which, honestly, is just a result of bad timing. Seth was hanging from a cliff edge, about to fall off. And then it turns out that Seth was just an idiot and chose to do something that reckless. That bothers me because, well, my cousin died from falling off a cliff in October. My cousin wasn't anything like Seth, but after that traumatic experience, I have an almost-instant dislike for people who would be that reckless. The story was really fun, though, and I often couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened. Scratch is definitely a creepy villian, though Tall Jake seems like a whiner right now, lol. "Awwww, I wanna lure more kids in. Why won't you let me get more kids? You guys just don't understand me!" And then he stomps off to go sulk in his room. I definitely enjoyed it, though, and I can't wait to read the others. ;D

I disliked Seth immediately for the exact same reason (although without the personal tragedy). I can't sympathise with most characters who would be that stupid, if he had died then and there he should have got some kind of fictional Darwin Award. I found the comic parts hard to understand in places, but I loved the pacing of them and little things like the conductor's creepy face looming out of nowhere wouldn't have been possible in writing. I loved how Skarla gave them three questions, but didn't do that stupid thing where ANY question uses up one of your chances. It was nice to have a wise woman who was normal enough to answer little questions at no charge.

I agree about Skarla. She was fun, though I doubt she'll make an appearance again. It'd be nice if she did, though.

I wasn't that bothered by Seth being reckless and thrill seeking. After all, it makes more sense that he would choose to travel to Malice - a whole new world no matter how gruesome would have been pretty appealing. Well, thrill seeking might be a bit over the top... er, I guess he learnt his lesson concerning that. xD I grew to like him more throughout the book and in the end he proved pretty usefull in finishing off evil kid-eating monsters. And he and Justin made an awesome team. Of awesomeness, yeah. I felt sorry for Luke, though. I clung to the hope that he might have made it. Oh, well...

I did too. I thought maybe he got away just as Grendel stopped drawing. I'm pretty sure he's quite dead now, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if he came back.

I doubt he will be back in Havoc. XD Oh well. So, who's participating in the competition held on www.malicecomic.co.uk/?Apparently, it's residents in the UK and Ireland only, though. EDIT: While reading the comic-bits I kept on thinking about "Pandemonium", the planned comic written by Chris. We haven't heard anything about that one in a long time, though apparently that is because there ain't much to tell anyway. XD But sheesh, a comic-book... ,__, me wants.

Oooh, I would participate in that, but, not being in the UK or Ireland kind of limits my options. Mmm, yeah, we haven't heard anything about Pandemonium recently. I hope Chris is still working on it. It would be so awesome.

Quickie Pandemonium update: It's done and written and delivered ages ago, probably about three years ago now, but it's been in development hell ever since as Scholastic US try and find an artist who's good enough, cheap enough, and is willing to be tied down to a 192-odd page graphic novel for a year. It's getting like Spinal Tap now... One guy agreed to do it, then quit being an artist, left the country and went to fight in Iraq. Jeez, it wasn't THAT bad

D: Oh man. I cannot believe there's no one who'd like to draw that. There must be... though I wouldn't know what artwork would be suitable for the story having no idea what it's like. I really hope they find someone because the comic passages in Malice were truely cool and easy to read even though it got a bit confusing now and then with the paneling. And I want a comic written by you. Semi-Spoilers for Malice (What made me smile was this short bit where Seth sees Grendel and the way he's described. Hunched over his work, scattered paper everywhere, ink and pens lying around... I thought: "Yeah, that's what it looks like." Maybe you should lock in your Pandemonium-artist as well once you've found one so that he doesn't scram, too.)

I would do it!! I'm sure I could take a break from my degree, and 192 pages isn't that much. It's only a little bit longer than the average Minx comic and I could totally do one of those. I wouldn't need to be paid that much. It might just be the 'good enough' part I'd fall down on. Seriously though, that's bad news. Poor Pandemonium... it has such a cool title too! How could any artist resist? Pandemonium is one of my favourite words.

Along with "cacophony" and "cornucopia". At least for me. (This is so off-topic.)

I also enjoy 'pernickety', 'brackish' and 'calid'.
My laptop doesn't think 'calid' is a real word.
