Orna is the only Wooding character that i've actually had trouble imagining... can someone please find a descripiton of her in the book and show me.... Because right now in my head she looks exactly like Moa (which is bad cause i highly doubt they look the same)

It says at some point she's got long black hair (at least long enough to tie into a ponytail), and I think that she's pale... that's as much as I visualise though.

I thought it said she had "dusky" skin... This is the problem with 1st person narration.

*sigh... grabs The Fade and flips through it I guess that not knowing exactly what she looks like is probably due to her society's obssesion with their looks (the whole ct surgery thing) I mean look at Liss and Casta

Yeah, she kinda had shoulder-length black hair and her skin was quite tan (as opposed to tanned ). But as you say, that's the problem with first-person narration. I try to avoid the 'I looked in the mirror and saw a 5'9'' woman with black hair and blue eyes etc', because you'd just never think that.

What age was she exactly? Maybe I'm just getting mixed up, but I seem to remember her saying that she was a slave 18 years ago when she first reveals that she had been one, which makes her 28. But then, she has a son whom I assume is fairly grown up at least, so that in my mind would make her older - and she does describe herself as middle aged, false modesty or not. Though I suppose child soldiers wouldn't be odd in their society. Again, perhaps I'm just getting numbers and ages all wrong. But yes, this did make my mental image of her jump around between ages a few times.

I think (though I may be wrong as I haven't read it for a while) that Orna is in her late thirties. I want to say 38, but I'm not sure if that's right or just a random number that's appeared in my head.

38 is spot on. She had Jai when she was 20, and Jai is 18 at the beginning of the book.

Yeah, I never thought she was younger than 30. It wouldn't have worked. And 38 is very do-able for someone in her profession, lol.

Oddly enough, after reading the first few chapters I simply decided that she had dark hair and nifty tattoos. I added some puzzle pieces while reading and then had a rather clear picture of her in my head.
When I tried to draw her, I failed, though, because of the tattoos. XD
Would have been fun, though. But I´m happy you didn´t write that. XD

While reading the hints (dusky skin from pale over blueish to grey or leathery colours, body modifications like silver fangs, brutish axe fighters, clan system etc.) I took the freedom to imagine the Eskarans "kinda orc". Just because I have a thing for orc women. It really works in the context of the story; especially as the Gurta came across very much like baroque elves.

In chapter 15, page 159, Orna describes herself and her tribe: "Small, hair very black, brown eyes, dusky skin -- I'm a typical Massima."

I always imagined her from that sentence, Denn-ai. Sort of Asian cross Mediterranean.
