in a way(s) you have answered this: could you give us a little(atleast) step by step idea on how your projects(that is the right term, right?) begin? atleast up to where the story is ready for publishing. if it's too long then... maybe 3 to 5 steps? about the glasses thing, being a person who wears them.. it's not too hard to keep them on. there is that fear of them falling off or what not(so i try not to look too far down a tall building ). hm.. never thought of it till now, the NBC series Heroes has a few characters with glasses (one who seems evil then you find out is good). then there's stargate, and some animateded series. i guess even though it's still rare, it's begining to pick up.. (sorry i'm rambling on something insignificant). although.. Nicholai isn't that evil of a name is it? (this was mostly so i can use that) wasn't one of the rulers of Russia named Nicholai? (may have been spelt diffrent) -not too familiar with my russian history- if i remember correctly.. i think went hans cristian was um.. alive? writters were paid by the.. (i think it was) word(or was it line)? -my memory is very hassy on this all of this- anyway, what is it now (not too interested in how much-too much-, just if it's still the same way)

I believe Nicholai is just Russian for Nicholas, like Alexei is Alexis. And yes, there were two Tsars called Nicholas, but the second one was so incompetant he was forced to abdicate during the February Revolution.
Poor Nicholas II... he was a lovely man but a terrible ruler.

Yes! Jade Empire is the best thing that ever came out of Bioware. >> KotOR was just too long. And wordy. Plus, the fights were slow and the romance questionnable.
So... Chris, if you can remember, which NPC if any did you try to woo?

Can you speak any foreign languages? I know you're learning Spanish, but what about any others? I know a handful of phrases in Spanish, and I'm slowly learning Japanese (to speak it, not writing it yet), so I was just wondering.
And you know, just by replying to all our questions and being so great about it has really been wonderful. It makes enjoying your books all the better because we know you a little bit in person now. ^_^

Wow... you people ask a lot of questions. So I'll keep my short and simple. Chris, in one of your blogs you talked about the release of 'Good Apollo...', Coheed and Cambria's latest cd. And in another blog you talked about a playlist of songs that you've made which I *think* had a Coheed and Cambria song on it (I'm too lazy to check). My Question: Are you a big fan of Coheed and Cambria? If you are, that'd be really cool/ironic. Cause they've been my favourite band since before I started reading your books (you're my fave author by the way).

ZOMG, what's it been, thirteen years or something like that? Ah, days of undercuts and cans of HSL first thing in the morning, listening to Alice In Chains... Them were the days. Old Bill Wooding, by garney does 'e love 'is bread... I got in touch with Seth a while back, btw, he's doing good. Married now and stuff. Saw Mat about four or five years back but then he disappeared off the face of the earth, presumably disappointed by my lack of undercut. Lemme know your email. If you register on the site you can send me a private message or something. PS to everyone else, will get round to those questions soon, am uber busy at the mo.

San Francisco is my favourite city in the States by far. Love it. I wouldn't say that I go travelling for inspiration, but sure, everyone you meet and all the places you go get added to the little inspiration-hoard and turn up later in books. A lot of locations in the Braided Path are from Thailand & Malaysia, for example. And just meeting all kinds of different people certainly helps for characters. They tend to pop up years later when I'm thinking about a story... suddenly they just fit in. Milk, but I don't eat it very much. Savoury rather than sweet No prob. I might have gone through it on a train, but I didn't stop there. Can't remember Myspace is cool for music and suchlike, it's just the Friendster-style, look-how-popular-I-am-among-people-I've-never-actually-met sites that bug me. Depends how similar, really. It's happened before and I've scrapped the story I've been writing. Couple of times I've been near the end of a book and discovered something I thought had uncomfortable similarities, but while I did worry about it, nobody ever noticed. Sure, why not? But I doubt any publisher is gonna pay to fly me over thousands of miles of ocean to go visit! Sometimes, I guess. *shrugs* But it doesn't affect the way I write the book. That was a bit more RPG. Played X1 and a bit of X2. They were pretty good but the trouble is they're SO colossal. When I realized X1 had a play-through time of about 100 hours or something I just thought forget it, I've got better things to do.

I like Y The Last Man, V for Vendetta, Watchman, Preacher, Sandman, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, that kinda thing. I guess the standard ones. I don't read loads of graphic novels because most of them are about superheroes and I don't like them (w/ the exceptions of anti-superhero type stories like Alan Moore sometimes does) Don't really have one, sorry. I don't really like any superhero films. I guess Batman Returns was probably the best. Already have. PANDEMONIUM comes out next year in the States, as far as I know. Am trying to find out definite details from Scholastic US at the moment. I want to do more in the future but right at the mo I haven't got the time. I sorta can't. The thing is that a lot of projects don't go anywhere so I tend not to talk about it unless it looks like it has a good chance of getting made; and when it gets to that point then I have to sign a lot of non-disclosure stuff which means I shouldn't talk about it on a public forum. But suffice to say it's doing nicely. I have a film that is now looking like it has a real shot at getting to the screen. I'm writing BEHIND YOU at the mo, which as I mentioned in my blog is a project for some producers in England but I can't say more than that, and I've got two or three other projects or scripts somewhere in the pipeline. Sorry to be evasive, it's just it's a long, slow, boring process that takes forever so apart from anything else, I don't want to keep yakking on about projects that might never get made. But as soon as anything gets greenlit y'all will know about it! OK, quickly, cos every question you ask is like essay-length 1) I have an idea 2) I tell the publishers. They like it. They agree to publish book based on idea. 3) I make billions of notes but don't actually look at them much. 4) I write the book, based on some kind of chapter outline. 5) I give it to my editors. They give it back with corrections, suggestions etc. 6) repeat step 5 until everyone is happy. 7) Publish book. What Vik said Only journalists get paid by the word nowadays. Novelists get paid to deliver the whole book, no matter how big it is. I'm ashamed to admit I don't know what OC means in this context, or which game you're referring to *further shame* No. Used to know a fair bit of Japanese, spent about 18 months studying it before I went out there, but I've totally forgotten everything. So it is my mission to learn Spanish!! NP, wish I had time to give longer answers... They can do what they like as long as they don't know my home address... ;D *cheers* Oh yes, they are way my favourite band. I am fully prepared to kill small children and eviscerate fluffy animals with my teeth to get my hands on their new album this year... although am rather sad they lost their rhythm section, those guys were brilliant
