A Kiss at the End of the World
Stormy the day on the shores of the sea.
Though dreary to her, it seemed lovely to me.
Above us an albatross set swiftly to flee
Perhaps for the fear of some calamity.
She looked and she sighed, and said pityingly,
"Water's for drinking, but don't drink the sea.
And dolls are for loving, but you can't love me."
But still, still I begged her with plea after plea.
"I've nothing to lose but the heart of me
And nothing to gain but the love of thee."
She'd heard it before, for one such as she
Could not but be loved by humanity.
Infatuation like mine was no rarity
For someone like her. But to me
The life of my light and the wind of my sea
Since the moment I saw her, forever she'll be.
Sighed I again with a glance about me.
Hopeless, hopeless futility!
What reason could she have to ever love me?
The sun might as well love a hazel tree.
But I turn to her still, and ask her softly
For one single kiss, a kiss just for me.
"I'll die for the want of the love of thee!
Your kiss might be the end of me
But I'd be glad to die so happily.
My death is forthcoming either way, you see."
Little I knew that hers was with me.
The sun caught her hair as she turned toward me:
The sun, as it sank beneath the sea
And illumined the world yellow and burgundy.
The wind and her voice were in harmony.
"Devotion so strong, rarely I see.
But my heart so broken, I cannot love thee.
I would things were different, but never that be
Till the earth dissolve into dust around me
Till mountains fall into bits around me
Till the ocean at last surrounds me and drowns me
And closes around me with fatality.
The world's end will see my heart with thee
Till then I am bound and chained within me.
Never to love and to never be free.
So it's pity, not love, that commits me to thee.
I'll share a single kiss with thee."
A tear escaped down contours of ivory
As, with a sigh, she drew near to me.
Ecstasy, ecstasy! Epiphany!
This is not love, but idolatry.
And I knew till the end of the world I would be
Hers forever, for eternity.
Scarce had we finished, when suddenly
A great thunder shook the earth beneath me.
Quaking me out of my reverie.
The mountains around us crashed into the sea:
The sea which at last, unpityingly
Swelled till it swallowed my love and me.
A fitting moment for the world's finale.
At last she was mine and at last she was free
As together we entered eternity.
Stormy the day on the shores of the sea.
Though dreary to her, it seemed lovely to me.
