I found this on a random floppy today. It's a sci-fi story I wrote for a class in 6th grade.
Balo 2087, above the planet of Balboa, the constant starry night shone through the windows of Theta 3, a modern warp ship. This was also the day Field Captain Burke and his three crew members, Field Commander Smith from the Osnoehm continent, and Squad leaders Tera and Webb, from the Vinso continent, left on an expedition to a place that scientists called Ardyh. The black spacious void seemed to beckon the presence of his heart and soul. He had spent three years prior to the launch date earning loans and support for acquiring licenses, a ship, crew, and supplies. It would take eleven years to reach Ardyh at full warp speed so no aspect of preparation for this trek could harbor a single miscalculation.
The shear size of Ardyh was wondrous enough but something even more astounding is that Ardyh appeared to be half way across the galaxy from any Balboan planetary settlements, but nobody knew exactly. One thing that everyone agreed on was it was baron, not a single star or a planet. Balboan people came to call Ardyh The Heavens because it was so far away, and out of reach, that no man had thought it possible to get there. Many of the older Balboans, who were in their last ages, believed “The Heavens” were just that. Every civil war in Balboan history arose from the debates of whether Ardyh was just an empty space or something faith driven.
Burke was a Field Commander for a Balboan defense squad. Smith was also a Field Commander for a defense-squad. Both of them were from the Osnoehm continent. On the other hand, Tera and Webb were from the Vinso continent and were both Balboan defense-squad leaders. Webb would be the pilot, Tera would be head of security, Smith would be the science chief, and Burke would be in command.
The crew was ready and in place coordinates to their destination locked in, and Theta 3 was waiting to let loose. The crew recited the checklist just as they had during simulations.
“Power online.” said Webb. “Controls functioning.”
“Shields online.” said Smith, excitedly.
Tera announced, “Cartridges fully charged.” as surely as she ever had.
Then after a moment of silence, Commander Burke yelled, “Full speed ahead!”
Theta 3 soared at unthinkable speeds through the constant night of space. Once Burke and his crew stabilized the ship for its eleven year journey, the time came for the four companions to enter the time enhancer. This chamber used another fairly new technology that could make years seem like days.
Tera entered first, then Webb, followed by Smith and then Captain Burke. The crew spent eleven days in the time enhancer with eleven days worth of rations. They came out un-scathed and healthy eleven years in the future. Nothing had changed except the amount of warp fuel and the date on the main control panel. Smith looked at his hands in amazement and could not understand how he had not aged a day, but he knew that time could not lie.
For the next two months, a large section of Ardyh was scanned and explored for small anomalies, asteroids, and gases that were missed by probes’ past scans for planets and stars. All that occupied this hole in time were Balboa’s oldest probes and a newly discovered ten-meter-wide gaseous nebula. Another month went by before they finally found another ship. The unidentified ship was still a good three days away from their current location. The anticipation was building.
The time came for the group to see what they pursued. Webb aimed Theta 3 toward the ship’s starboard side. Amazement filled their eyes as the unidentified ship came into view. None of them had seen anything like it; terror filled their hearts. Silence engulfed the room, covering up the excitement and thrill that had been present moments earlier.
Horror bogged down Smith’s now crippled mind. At nearly seven hundred meters long, the ship was bigger than the vessels in the Balboan fleet. Turrets lined the length of the hull on both sides and five missile tubes could be seen with naked eye. The sides of the ghastly ship had rusted over and the windows had marks that looked like blood had splattered all over the inside of the monstrosity. He suddenly got the feeling that they should not be anywhere near this ship from Hell.
“Get your gear ready.” said Burke.
Webb asked, “What the hell do you plan on doing?”
Burke blurted out a reply as though he was withholding his deepest anger and fear. “We’re gonna see what’s on that thing!”
Burke decided that they had come too far to abandon any chance of gaining information about Ardyh. As it went, they silently but quickly put on their bio-suits to protect them from dangerous temperatures and atmosphere and activated the plasma rifles. They each recorded a private video to be sent home just in case they never stepped foot on the ship again. The four stepped onto the transport pads and with a single press of a button, they were no longer on Theta 3. The ship was empty and cold.
The “enemy” ship, dark and cold enough to make Burke cool through his bio-suit. Two lights on their helmets were on and illuminating. The air was stale. Grates covered the floor while steam billowed up through the holes. Pipes covered with a waxy covering ran along the walls and ceiling. The exploring began.
They were split up in two groups of two, Burke with Tera and Smith with Webb. Room by room, they searched for anything useful. Tera had cleared the last room in their sector so she radioed Webb, but there was no answer. They had to find the other two and get back to the ship. After traversing the corridors, they went to where they transported in.
Burke turned around and Tera was not there. Suddenly a gruesome creature dropped from above him, pinning him to the floor before his rifle fired a shot. He was being crushed by the weight of the alien. The last thing he saw was a set of small red eyes piercing into his mind. The light shut off and life faded.
