I think the point of the ending was ambiguity, not setting up for a sequel. A hopeful uncertainty.

It's actually pretty hard to tell in my opinion whether Chris Wooding was setting it up for a sequel or not, but if I had to guess, I would say not. I can't think of any storyline for a sequel that would really be as good as Storm Thief, although I do like what theredfactor suggested about them ending up at Orokos again. There are quite a few books that were quite good, but the sequels really stank. I wouldn't want Storm Thief to be one of them.

I wouldn't mind Chris using the world of Orokos again, just not Rail/Moa/Vago/etc (I'm scared of a sequel ruining my lovely image of them). Orokos was my second favorite part of the book, after the characters, and there're so many possibilites (heh) for an interesting story set there.

i've thought about writing my own fanfic for this story, but instead of using all the same characters, writing in one of my own. i dont know though lol. not so good at fanfics.
but you guys should write your fics and i'll read them. to me, that'd be just as good as a sequel.
i thought moa's eyes were brown.. and her lipstick was green. it's been a while since i read the book though...

A prequel would be more interesting, in my opinion... how Orokos was founded and stuff. It could also establish the time period, which was left open originally... although the fireworks they saw suggest a time not much earlier than the 18th century, I think it would be a much more compelling story if it were thousands of years ago, long enough ago to have been the basis for the Atlantis myths. (Anyone else notice big resemblences between it and Tolkien's Numenore?)

Lost civilisations are a pretty standard theme in fiction, I don't think it would be very interesting for it to be far in the past.
Besides, he said it was a dystopia, by definition a dystopia takes place in the future.

And the future can be more fun to explore than the past.

I guess. He could make it work though.
It might be interesting if it were contemporary with the United States, the fireworks they saw being Independance Day in 1776 and placing Storm Thief's story in modern times. There could be some interesting parallels there, as the founders of the US were trying to escape from the world the same way the Orokos founders were. I don't know if that would be interesting to read though.
Also, a dystopia does not by definition take place in the future; it's simply the opposite of a utopia, which is a perfect society. One might even call oppressive, totalitarian dictatorships dystopias. (Or would it be dystopiae?)

See, I always pictured Orokos as being waaaaaaaaaaay in the future. And that our society (or at least the near future's) is the Fade people. Or something. >_< My memory of the book is very very bad, but yeah, I figured their past was our more-or-less present. Of course, it leads me to wonder what the Fade was in the book, lol.

Yeah. As I've said before, that Benejes (sp?) guy reminded me of Benjamin Franklin.

Orokos and The World that the Fade takes place in are in my opinion the best wooding settings ( I havent read broken sky yet)

To be honest, I liked Haunting's London more, lol. But for settings he made up...Probably one of the Poison Realms. I did like Orokos too though. ^_^
