I learned you live only one state over from me by glancing at your location.
Also, I noticed that the time before "Storm Thief" Was called "The Fade" do you think he just really liked the way that sounded or is it connected?

I'm sure he would have told us if it was the same thing, he seems quite free with the hints. Otherwise, the book was originally called 'Halflight' but then he found out that there was a Demi Moore film of the same name in production and changed it. I'm sure if it was connected 'The Fade' would be his first choice of title rather than a replacement.

What does everyone think of the concept cover? Does it make you more compelled to read it or does it lower your expectations? I hope none of you judge a book by its cover.

I don´t judge a book by its cover. But sometimes I just buy books because the cover was pretty. I did read a page or two, of course. XD And it was a nice book... so I got lucky.
I like the cover. Because it looks, well, painted. Although I cannot tell whether it was done with cg or with real paint... Anyway. It has a great, menacing atmosphere and I guess the book will be dark as well. Given that it´s set underground.
Concerning the title, I do think it´s got some deeper meaning. Who would pick a name for a book that has nothing to do with plot or setting or characters? XD The Demi Moore-movie is nice actually. xD And Henry Ian Cusick is in it -> I´m happy.

I didn't mean the title had no connection to the story, I just meant it was probably a coincidence that an event in one of his other books has the same name.
As for the cover, I love it. It looks a lot like the style of the Alaizabel edition I've got. But as for judging a book by its cover, I'm afraid there's no way not to. When I'm browsing a bookshop the size of Waterstones the books that catch my eye are the ones with either a really good cover or a really good title, then I read the blurb, then if it sounds good I check the first couple of pages, but if it has an uninspiring (or worse, ugly) cover it never catches my eye. Most of my friends don't even look at the title, just the cover. Even if you don't consciously look for a nice cover, subconsciously you're biased towards a book with cover art that appeals.

The cover of Poison and Storm Thief actually turned me off, but I'm glad I still got them.

I wasn't amazingly keen on the crazy orange Storm Thief cover, but by then I was buying anything with Chris Wooding's name on it so it didn't matter.
Which Poison cover do you have? I have the one with the bone witch's house on the front, but I know there's one with a girl's face and one with a more manga-style full-length picture of Poison.

I generally go by title, then read the blurb, THEN look at the cover. Just my way of doing things, I guess. But yeah, the Poison cover REALLY turned me off at first. I have the American version (duh) and it's a big close up of Poison's face. Just the title and the cover made me hesitate to read it for like a year after its release. I bought it right away, but it just collected dust for a long time. At that time, though, I had only ever read Haunting, so I really hadn't thought of him as my favorite author yet. As for The Fade, I think the cover looks great, but I'll be buying the book when it comes out either way. Also, I noticed that you live right next door, state-wise to me as well. ^_^ A five to six hour drive, but that's not bad. ^_^

I have the American version of Poison also, with her face on it and I also have the American version of Storm Thief with Rail's face on it. I really hesitated to by Storm Thief. A guys head with a mask of some type over his mouth and dreadlocks really isn't appealing to me. I don't know why. I will definately order The Fade from the UK, but Yay for the states!!!

Yeah, I have that version of Storm Thief too, but by that time, I was too into Chris Wooding, and the inside cover blurb just sounded so cool! I don't really like faces on the cover like Poison and Storm Thief. One of my copies of Alaizabel is really cool, and a limited edition! It was a preview-only copy, and that version of the cover was not sold to the public, but it's really cool. The British cover (at least the cover on my British edition) is very very similar, but still different. ^_^

The Fade cover has been slightly tweaked now with a different title font, looks a bit more SF-ey than before, but I like it much better. As to the title, it's coincidence, although I honestly didn't remember until much later that I'd also used the word in Storm Thief, and by that time the title was so tied up in the story that I couldn't change it. Duh They mean different things anyway; the Fade in Storm Thief refers to the disappearance of a civilisation, in The Fade it means... well, wait and see ;D

Light fading? Clothes/furniture/color-in-general fading? Flowers fading? Intellegence fading? ~EDIT~ After a trip to dictionary.com I've got it: "Football. (of an offensive back, esp. a quarterback) to move back toward one's own goal line, usually with the intent to pass, after receiving the snapback from center or a hand-off or lateral pass behind the line of scrimmage (usually fol. by back): The quarterback was tackled while fading back for a pass." The Fade's gonna be about underground, si-fi football, played on the backs of giant flying ray things! XD
