Wow, best of luck to your friend at Oxford! I've been considering applying there, though the whole interview process sounds rather scary. But nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Anyway, I think about half of my friends read anything at all, and probably only five of them read fiction.
I remember I was sitting reading a book during a break in Psychology a few months back and my friend in that class said that she didn't know how I could sit there and just read, and that she hadn't read a novel for years. I sat and gawped at her until the end of the break.
I just couldn't imagine not reading anything; I've been a bookworm since I was a toddler. I used to tell my mam I was going upstairs for a toy, and come down with a book instead. ;D

I'd say about one friend reads, and the books he reads are nearly always non-fiction about survival. Or setting things alight. I don't ever remember having that sort of urge, but I distinctly remember using the first two Pokemon versions (red and blue) to teach myself how to read when I was in pre-school. My mom also told me I started reading chapter books in Kindergarden, which made me feel special.... I'm sure I wouldn't be reading HALF as well as I do if my family had any cousins my age. All of my cousins are either twenty-four, or 3. I'm quite good with being left all by myself. Say, weren't we introducing new people in this topic? I remember forums where you'd be flogged with steel-tipped whip for getting off-topic..... Needless to say, their forums SUCKED.

Meh, most new people make their own thread. There's only so much you can say to welcome someone.
I couldn't read until I was about 6. Know why? Because my big sister told me I couldn't and I just believed her! I was so gullible back then, it's hilarous...

Aww, bless! A friend of mine doesn't believe just how evil big brothers and sisters can be. My lot once told me they were going to cut me up into little pieces and stick me in the microwave. I was only about 4 or 5, so I started screaming and my mam had to come in from the garden and tell them off.

My lot once told me they were going to cut me up into little pieces and stick me in the microwave. I would've done the same to my younger brother (luckily, I am the oldest). He hates to read, I've tried to get him to do so, but he's just not a fan. I don't remember learning how to read, but I would've been about four or so when I used to pull out my parents' medical textbooks and try to read them... Mum would find me and replace the books with something more age-appropriate.
