I'm interested to hear what everyone's opinions on Tane are (and to get more active topics a-bounding), hence the creation of this thread.
Tane is rather unique within the Braided Path for a few reasons; his religious stance made it such that he loathed abberants more than most, yet he was generally considered a 'good guy', not only that but his religion made him rather different from most characters as they had a much more relaxed view towards religion than him. Not only this, but earlier in the book it specifically states that he is braided in with the others, yet he still dies.
His character development isn't exactly the focus of the book, but it's still well written. And develop he does, Tane has one of the most complicated relationships in the entire series (the only one which could be considered to be more complex is that of Kaiku and Asara), and this changes him.
Anyone want to expand on this?

The reason why it says he's braided in with the rest is explained in book 3.
Important edit: Major Spoiler in a reply further down for book three!

Well, he did sacrifice his life for Lucia's. So it isn't only the impact on Kaiku, but rather on the entire Libera Dramach... and stuff.

~:SPOILERS:~
Tane was one of my favourite characters in the whole series. I think i liked him cos he was constantly trying to improve himself. And i liked the fact that he fell in love with a girl that made him completley change the way he looked at the world (has happened to me (in fact they're the only ones i go for)). I was kind of annoyed when he died. But it just solidified how much of a good guy he was.

Tane dies?! I knew I souldn't have entered this topic.
Anyway, I'm around 150 pages into The Weavers of Saramyr, and Tane is probably my favorite character so far. He's so cute! *glomps*
Edit: I can't swear here? Oh well, I suppose it's for the best. -_-

Tane was so confusing for me! I never really decided if I really liked him or found him annoyingly half-emo. And then he died! And I was like...wait...what...am I crying...smiling...whut....aww screw it I'm sad for Kaiku.

Same here, only I was leaning more towards disliking him. It was nothing personal, really, other than he reminded me of somebody I know. I was still sad when he died.

Not entirely sure if this goes here, but anyway.
One thing I am curious about is what happened to his mother and sister when they left. It does seem kind of sad that he died without ever having seen the sister he loved so much again, even if I never really warmed to his character much. Especially when you consider that he did it because of what his father did to her.

Yeah... kind of unsatisfying from a reader's point of view. But at the same time, it gives the story "back" a bit of realism that we didn't hear from them again.

(SPOILERS)(SPOILERS)(SPOILERS) (SPOILERS)(SPOILERS)(SPOILERS) (SPOILERS)(SPOILERS)(SPOILERS) (SPOILERS)(SPOILERS)(SPOILERS)
I finished the book just hours ago. I thought Tane was going to be one of the main characters through the whole trilogy, but once he died, I didn't miss him much. I was anticipating him searching for his mother and sister while journeying with the gang. Sure he was involved in a lot, but he was rarely 'in the hot seat'. I can see how Kaiku felt guilty though.

I loved Tane, so I was really sad when he died, but I could kind of see it coming. I mean, there was no way they were ALL going to get out of that alive.
As for why I liked him, I think it was because of his religious conviction, it was interesting to see a strongly religious person having to deal with all the things that happen to them and struggling to reconcile the things they encounter with his faith.

I was surprised that i was actually kind of sad at his death. It was to be expected that he'd die, but I didn't think it'd be in the first book. Like most everyone else, I couldn't decide if I really liked him, or was just indifferent, but his death still made me sad, and I felt bad for Kaiku because she was an idiot, lol. I guess the scene that he dies in made the difference.
