I think she'd raise them to be like her too. She said that she hated her "curse". Why would she raise her children to embrace it?

Lucia's death surpised me and...honestly delighted me
I loved the book and had gotten into te comfort zone that one gets into when they realize they've seen this plot line before. Girl with special powers saves everyone yadayadayada
BUT THEN SHE DIED! I was like *gasp* WHAT?! You broke the rules.
The I happily kept reading cause I love Chris Wooding and his ability to make me giddy

@ Aryeec - I always thought one of the main reasons she hated her particular 'curse' was because she was the only one. Everyone else would grow old and die (except for the Red Order, and Asara never liked them). But now she has her children she won't be alone anymore. Besides, they have someone to teach them to live like her, how to control their powers which was something she never had. Her children will have it so much better.
Ah, I love (not really the right word... appreciate?) the way she died as well. It was nothing (well not immediately) to do with her powers, or the spirits, or even the weavers and their army. It was Nomoru, who, incidentally, saved what I imagine was a very many number of lives in doing so. It's so unclichéd... but so unfair. Why? Why? She was trying to save them all, even if she didn't want to.

The only death that particularly came out of nowhere for me was Anais'....I don't know why but I kinda expected more from her than that, although (sorry Chris) I found her later behaviour towards her renegade husband rather annoying (just kick him to the kerb! Other feminist sounding shouts! etcetera!)
Tane was for the chop the moment he so much as SNIFFED Kaiku, and Lucia....well tbh it would have been much sadder for her therefore the story in general if she'd survived so her death keeps the tears brimming but no further...and saves fines on a damged book XD
*addition* oh and I don't think Asara would raise her children to be 'like her' she wasn't a hateful person just lonely and I think her last act proves that having children made her into an altogether softer person

As much as Anais probably hated her husband, his family were a very strong political ally (at least they pretended to be) and if she annulled the marriage she'd have a tonne of problems fair greater then an unfaithful husband.
I'm not sure that actually having the children made Asara more inclined to save Kaiku. I think, Asara is too proud to let her debt go, even if the only one other the her that knew of it was hardly able to know it was going unpaid.
But still: she did save Kaiku, and that in itself is an indication in my mind that she's not the horrible person others may see. Her children were told to be playing with the other children. Highly traumatised kiddies probably wouldn't, showing her children knew how to socialise and therefore had been raised at least somewhat decently. But maybe I'm just looking into it too far.
