The whole Asara/Saran thing was very devious. I totally not even subconsciously saw that coming. I was absolutely surprised. Asara will destroy herself with this obsession over Kaiku. >.<

I know! It's so darn sneaky. So clear in hindsight but I had no clue right up until it was spelled out for me. It's sort of, we know it could happen, and everything pointed to Saran being more than human, but it's still unexpected. Because, honestly, who sees a man and thinks, ooh, better watch out, it could be my shapeshifting stalker who happens to be female.

I've never really had a problem with sex scenes in stories as long as they have meaning or add something to overall story and its progression. If it's handled well, then it can add another layer to a story and do many things, such as further characters and their interaction with one another. It all comes down to the build up and execution of the scene, not to mention the issue of taste! I've always enjoyed the adult scenes in David Gemmells work (not like that!) because he usually builds it up and brings it in at the right moment. The scene between Miriel and Senta from Waylander 2 is a good example. I also find they sometimes make characters feel more believable. Sex is a very human and natural thing and witnessing the characters engaging in the act just adds a certain connection. It also be a critical moment in a romantic relationship and a trying point. Or it could be used as a means to show characters blowing off steam, among others things < predictable joke! Of course it all hinds on the fact of well written it is and how well it’s used, played out, and its context.
